McALLEN, TEXAS — A man armed with an assault rifle and wearing a utility vest was shot and killed by federal authorities Friday morning after opening fire outside a U.S. Border Patrol annex facility near McAllen International Airport, according to multiple sources.
The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Ryan Luis Mosqueda, shot at the federal facility and was met with return fire from Border Patrol agents, according to a source familiar with the incident.
A source inside the building told Nick Valencia News the volley of gunfire “could be heard from inside” the facility.
At least one local law enforcement officer was injured in the exchange, according to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.
The annex facility, which houses multiple departments of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), was placed on lockdown during the incident. It is located nearby McAllen International Airport, and air traffic was briefly impacted. Flights have now resumed.
The motive behind Mosqueda’s actions remains unclear. Multiple weapons were found in his vehicle in the annex parking lot, according to the McAllen police chief.
According to U.S. Border Patrol, the FBI is now the lead agency investigating the incident, with assistance from local and federal partners.
