DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Popular Spanish-language journalist Mario Guevara was detained by riot police Saturday afternoon while covering a protest in metro Atlanta against former President Donald Trump.
Guevara, an independent journalist with a social media following of nearly 800,000 subscribers, appeared to be taken into custody while broadcasting live on Facebook during the “No Kings” protest. Video of the moment shows Guevara with his hands behind his back as officers in tactical gear confiscated his cell phone — though the live feed continued even as he was being detained.
“Officer, officer, I’m in the middle of a video, officer,” Guevara can be heard saying in the video, as he stood wearing a flak jacket clearly labeled “Press.”
The broadcast began as demonstrators marched through parts of DeKalb County but escalated into a tense confrontation with police. About an hour into the stream, officers in riot gear moved in on Guevara and took him into custody with little apparent warning.
Guevara is one of the few national journalists who has continued to cover Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids extensively throughout Trump’s second administration, earning him both acclaim and scrutiny.
Attempts to reach Guevara for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
Nick Valencia News has also reached out to the DeKalb County Police Department for a statement on Guevara’s detention and whether charges are being pursued.
