The border was never out of control, though a lot of people were coming. There was never an invasion, just political theater that used vulnerable people as pawns. The system has always been cruel, but Trump & Co cranked it to 11 the first time; now their cruelty is off the charts. I'm troubled by a man of the cloth encouraging the person and regime now committing ethnic cleansing of brown and black people to take a victory lap. All they've ever done, through family separation, metering, Remain in Mexico, border externalization, faux "safe" third country agreements, mass detention (aka imprisonment), and mass deportation in shackles and chains, is to cause abject misery and pain to untold thousands. Refoulement is an international crime. Extending borders as a way to make end runs around the Refugee Protection Regime, such that people are vulnerable to being preyed upon by organized crime, syndicates that only exist because of the market opportunity created by our actual and bureaucratic walls, should be an international crime. Take a victory lap? There is NO victory to celebrate here. There is only shame. History will remember what has happened and is happening in our name. History will remember it correctly.

I'm doing my best, Elena. My book, Crossing the Line: Finding America in the Borderlands, chronicles the inhumanity of the first regime. And overnight, last November, it became a bellwether of the horrors to come, the horrors we're now living through. I should send a copy to the Archbishop. There is no victory to celebrate here.

The president is not arresting criminals. His administration is committing genocide of non-whites.
