OXFORD, GEORGIA— In small town Georgia, a like-minded group of progressive organizers is leading the effort to stop what could become one of the largest ICE detention facilities in the country. They’re operating in deeply conservative terrain, and meet regularly out of a local home built in 1840 owned by the sharpest voice of the group, 85-year-old, Juanita Carson. As details of the proposed mega center come into focus, Juanita and head organizer Gareth Fenley are finding new, if uneasy, alignment with neighbors who share concerns about scale, impact, and what this project would mean for their town.
