Violent Clashes Erupt in Burlington as ICE & Vermont State Police Gas Local Residents

By Nick Valencia | March 11, 2026

BURLINGTON, VERMONT— Violence erupted this evening as local residents clashed with federal immigration agents and State Police during a tense hours-long standoff during which ICE went inside a man’s home to detain him.

Law-enforcement deployed tear gas and other chemical irritants as videos from the scene showed onlookers choking on the smoke. According to independent media outlet VT Digger, legal filings identified the address as belonging to a Mexican national who was targeted by ICE for illegal re-entry after being deported in 2022.

According to eyewitnesses, the Vermont State Police tactical team pushed back local residents trying to stop federal agents from entering the home. This sparked a crowd of roughly 150 protesters, alongside state and local police.

Videos from the scene showed multiple explosions of chemical irritants as smoke plums filled the air. Several people were taken into custody, according to VT Digger.

The situation is still developing, and I will continue to bring you the latest as new details emerge.
